US Updates Green Card Form: Find Out What's New and When It Will Be Effective

The changes did not wait until 2025, they started now! And if I talk to you about the recent changes in the form to obtain the Green Card in the United States, if you are thinking about taking that big step towards permanent residence, stay with me because here I am going to tell you everything you need to know in a simple and clear way.

What’s happening with the Green Card application?

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has made some important changes to the I-485 form, which you need to apply for legal permanent residence. This form, which is often referred to as “the gateway” to the long-awaited Green Card, has been updated to make it easier and faster. That sounds great, right?!

First change: All together, please!

Previously, if you needed to submit medical and vaccination information, you had to do it at a different time on Form I-485. A hassle, really! But now, you’ll have to submit Form I-693 (which is the medical and vaccination exam) at the same time as the I-485. If you don’t, your application could be rejected. So you better not forget that detail!

Second change: Goodbye to the extra form

Β Previously, there was a form called I-864W that some applicants had to file if they were exempt from filing the affidavit of support. But now, that hassle is over! The exemption can be requested directly on the I-485. This means less paperwork and more efficiency. Let’s celebrate that this 24th!

Third change: Clearer questions

Β Another important change is that the public charge questions on Form I-485 are now clearer. This means that you will have the opportunity to better explain your situation. Previously, many people had a hard time understanding what was being asked, and that could lead to confusion. So, a round of applause for clarity, please.πŸ‘

When will these changes come into effect?

Now, here comes the important part: changes are already underway! The new Form I-485 is available in the new edition of Form I-485, which is dated 10/24/24 and as of February 10, 2025, only this new version will be accepted! So, if you are thinking about applying, make sure you use the correct version. And remember, the first change regarding the medical exam is already effective as of December 2 of this year. So don’t rest on your laurels!

In summary, what should you know?

So far, everything sounds great! But don’t forget that the best and most advisable thing is to have an immigration lawyer by your side. They know how to properly carry out these processes and can make your application better presented and even more solid.

Remember that these changes are to make things easier, but they do not prevent legal advice. Don’t hesitate to look for resources for Latino immigrants or professional help if you need it.

So, what do you think about these changes? Do you find them useful? Let me know in the comments! I’m here to help you. Until next time and good luck in your citizenship process! 🌟
